The Briefest Possible Summary Of The Essence Of New Work

New Work is an ascent, an up-rising through the intelligent and imaginative use of a spate of startlingly innovative technologies, some of which are extremely basic, while others are miles beyond where computers are now.

These Technologies have in common that they are all “small-scale and small-space.” They no longer require gigantic factories with long lines of enormous machines that necessitate boatloads of capital. Instead, they can be grouped together in a neighborhood, or village or a community center. In short, one half of New Work is the transformation from Industrial to “Community Production.”  The result will be the creation of new enterprises, but also progressively the increasing local production of food, housing, and energy, and equally of furniture, appliances and clothing, and beyond that of still more of what is needed for a pleasurable, modern and fulfilling life.

The foundation of this New Economy, is the base on which a new system of work and eventually a new life-style and culture can be evolved.  Instead of being restricted to one ever more problematic mode of work, that of jobs,

History

The History of New Work
Dr. Frithjof Bergmann successfully began the first New Work program in the late 1980’s in Flint, MI, responding to a crisis caused by an economic downturn and General Motors downsizing its plants in Flint. New Work essentially developed small-scale, local work that created jobs by providing the community with necessary goods and services that had been supplied by businesses outside the community – and which took hard-to-come-by monies out of the area. Business practices were taught, as well as personal development training, and then entrepreneurial training that allowed New Work to widen the variety of products and services offered, and broaden its scope to address needs in other communities.

New Culture

"The now dying culture was founded on the premise that human beings are ferocious feral beasts that need to be socialized, i.e. de-clawed and un-teethed.  The now culture knows that exactly the reverse is true, that the “mass of men” are fragile, easily discouraged, and even walled off from their own deep desires."

New Work seeks to build a network of New Work Communities, each complete with fully equipped community centers, housing developments, village-wide infrastructures, community, self-providing activities, and decentralized manufacturing centers.
New Work can also organize small groups to band together to employ high tech self-providing techniques while organizing a co-operative business venture based on New Work Technologies.
New Work provides the conceptual framework needed so that that a comprehensive strategic approach is able to achieve economically independent communities.

"The mission of the Center for New Work is to develop practical solutions to the present crisis in the world of work.  The new technology comes towards us like a large wave; if we do nothing it could drown us, but if we move with intelligence and skill the wave could lift us higher than we ever were before."
